You Have Words v1.5.0

An updated version of You Have Words Italian was released this week. As with the previous update this is only available for iOS 7 which is now the minimum supported version. If you have an older device you should still be able to download an older unsupported version. This is a minor feature release to add the option to use the built-in speech synthesis and also to improve the dictionary search results.

Speech Synthesis

Since the release of iOS 7 by Apple there has been a built-in feature that makes it easy to use speech synthesis to pronounce both English and Italian words. This is in no way a substitute for a native speaker but I decided to make it an option for those that want it. When enabled a loudspeaker icon will appear on the flashcards as shown below:

Tapping the loudspeaker will cause the word to be spoken. You can also hear the word when browsing the dictionary by tapping on the word when viewing the word details.

I know from initial feedback that not all users will like this feature. The pronunciation is very mechanical which may be off-putting for some. Give it a try but if it annoys you it can be disabled from the settings (General > Speech).

You can also adjust the speech rate and volume if desired. I find the slower speeds work better but you can experiment to find what works best for you.

Improved Search Results

The dictionary word search feature is accessed by tapping the search icon in the word details view. This feature performs a search on Twitter to show the word as it used in context. This release has improved the results by removing duplicates and other meaningless results caused by matching against meta data such as the username. The matched words are now also highlighted in red.

Compatibility

This update requires a minimum version of iOS 7 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

You Have Words v1.4.1

A minor update was released last week for You Have Words Italian. This update is only available for iOS 7 which is now the minimum supported version. If you have an older device you should still be able to download an older unsupported version. This was mostly a bug fix release with some minor improvements as described below.

Dictionary Updates

The dictionary has been updated and now has 1970 words. The new Atlas topic includes words for the most common European countries. There are also numerous corrections and additions based on user feedback including what I hope is now a more consistent use of the definite article. If you have think you have spotted an error in the dictionary please send details to feedback@youhavewords.com.

Improvements and Bug Fixes

There has been a number of improvements and bug fixes included in this release:

Dark Background Mode

The white background of the new iOS 7 user interface was too bright for some users so I have added an option to use a dark background. You can enable the option from the Settings within the App:

Bigger Buttons for the iPhone

The score buttons on the iPhone have always been a bit small for anybody with big fingers. The iOS 7 redesign included new larger buttons but were still constrained by the screen height when the device was in landscape orientation.

Using the App in landscape on the iPhone was never a great experience so in this release is no longer supported. This has allowed the buttons to be larger and much easier to tap. The new button size are shown below with the dark background setting enabled:

Word Details Now Displayed on the iPad in a Popover

Using the Info button for a flashcard to display the word details used to display the details in a full screen window on the iPad. In this release the details are now shown in a smaller popover window. The iPhone version of the App is unchanged. The new word detail display for the iPad is shown below:

Miscellaneous fixes

  • Fixed a bug that caused some long words to not fit on the flashcard. Long words are now reduced in size to fit on the card.
  • Accessibility improvements.
  • Improved support for dynamic text sizes.
  • Card style and background mode settings now correctly sync to all devices via iCloud.

Compatibility

This update requires a minimum version of iOS 7 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
